Teen Program Zine Exhibition
Titled Zines. Zines! Zines?, this exhibition of thirteen young artists from the inaugural ICA SF Teen Program embraces and expands the form of the zine, a DIY form of publishing centered in radical expression and community. These talented teens lead us on journeys of self-discovery, inspired by themes in our current exhibitions, like repurposing unexpected materials and amplifying narratives pushed to the margins. Topics in their artwork on view range from friendship, gender expression, and culture clashes to sci-fi, geography, and the beauty inherent in decay.
Teen Program participants come from all across the Bay Area and have spent this semester diving deep into ICA SF exhibitions, learning about the contemporary art world, and making their own zines.
Students explored this art form with City Studio artists and Teen Program Lead Educators Amy Berk and Chris Treggiari and their Mobile Zine-Making Studio (consisting of a Mobile Zine Machine and Mobile Art Bike).
Thank you to everyone who made this program possible: the Foundation for Quality Housing Opportunities; CCA Center for Art and Public Life (CAPL); Vicky Li, Isaiah Torok, Cheryl Meeker, and all the teaching artists; and the Education Advisory Council. Above all we are grateful to the teens themselves whose fresh voices make it all worthwhile.
