First Annual Homecoming Benefit
September 14, 2023
6 pm - 10pm
ICA SF

We are throwing our first annual Homecoming Benefit! This event is crucial to keeping the museum free, building our educational program, and providing artists with new opportunities. Inspired by retro high school dances and homecoming carnivals, join us for an evening of spiked punch bowls, fun food, dancing to throwback hits, games, art, and fundraising. Let’s celebrate an incredible first year!

We’ll be celebrating our incoming and outgoing “classes” of solo show artists including Jeffrey Gibson, Liz Hernández, Ryan Whelan, Patrick Martinez, and Rupy C. Tut. Entertainment will include a live set from Coverflow and DJ, a surprise dance squad performance, a short (we promise!) program, and an opportunity to bid on select artworks and VIP experiences. The event will be MCed by ICA SF “Principal” David Hornik. And of course there will be a photo op with streamers, balloons, and lots of shimmer to give your best “prom pose.”

Dress code: As always, we’re keeping it festive, not fancy. We encourage you to dress to the theme of Homecoming - whether it’s a varsity jacket, or school dance attire inspired by memories or media. Get as wild and creative with the theme as you want!

Homecoming Silent Auction

Jeffrey Gibson, Forest (THIS BURNING WORLD) and Moss and Sunshine (THIS BURNING WORLD), 2023. Fine art pigment prints, 30 x 40 inches each. Edition of 3 plus 3 A.P. Framed by Spot Design.

Courtesy the artist and Sikkema Jenkins Gallery, NY

These two works are specifically created for the ICA SF by Cherokee-Choctaw artist Jeffrey Gibson, based upon his critically acclaimed inaugural exhibition at the ICA SF, THIS BURNING WORLD. His immersive video installation, which Gibson has called “among his most ambitious projects to date,” captured all four seasons changing across dramatic vistas and intimate details of the land around his home in the Hudson Valley.

This work is a layered and complicated exploration of land acknowledgement, and a significant moment in Gibson’s career trajectory. In these printed stills from THIS BURNING WORLD, we see the unique “masking” technique reminiscent of the patterning throughout Gibson’s multimedia practice. This is a very special opportunity to own work by one of the most significant artists living and working today.

Jeffrey Gibson lives and works in Hudson, NY. This summer, it was announced that Gibson will be the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States at the 2024 Venice Biennale!

Each is valued at $10,000, with starting bids of $6,500.

Patrick Martinez, Dogpatch Community Court, 2023. Acrylic on panel. 46 ½ x 30 ½ inches, framed in shadow box.

This is an incredible site-specific painting created for his upcoming solo show, Ghost Land. His design is translated into a public mural on the newly refurbished Dogpatch Community Basketball Court commissioned in partnership with the ICA SF, The Warriors Foundation and Alive & Free. Painted in the style of his well-known Pee Chee Folder series, this work features portraits of graduates from Alive & Free’s violence prevention and leadership programs.

Valued at $15,000, with starting bid of $7,500. Don’t miss this chance to own a unique painting that truly encapsulates the community impact of Patrick’s exhibition.

Please note: this work will be exhibited in Patrick Martinez: Ghost Land, on view September 23, 2023 - January 7, 2024. Winning bidder must agree to loan the work for the duration of the exhibition.

Patrick Martinez, Rise and Shine, 2017. Neon on plexiglass. 8.5 × 14 inches. Edition of 30.

Courtesy of the artist and Charlie James Gallery, LA.

Exhibiting artist Patrick Martinez fabricates neon sign works to mirror street-level commercial signage, but remixes them with words and phrases drawn from literary and oratorical sources. In his words, Patrick seeks to “tell the stories of the communities, people, and establishments that create the signs and symbols that so distinctly characterize Los Angeles.”

Valued at $5,000, with starting bid of $2,500.

Rupy C. Tut, Short echo of a long conversation, 2023. Handmade pigments on hemp paper. 11 x 7.5 inches. Framed by Spot Design.

Courtesy the artist and Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco.

Oakland-based artist Rupy C. Tut has been rising to extraordinary visibility in the Bay Area and beyond, with her practice preserving historic pigment-making methods and creating delicate works inspired by traditional Indian painting. She weaves contemporary images and references into a centuries-old visual language, encouraging viewers to connect the past and present.

This unique new work captures the conceptual core of her upcoming solo exhibition at the ICA SF, Out of Place. Inspired by her ancestors, Tut’s figures navigate the complicated relationship between body and land, finding ways to belong in the environments around them.

Valued at $9,000, with starting bid of $5,500.

Left: Ryan Whelan, Saving treats until they’ve spoiled, 2020. Ink and pastel on paper. 22 x 30 inches. Framed by Spot Design. Value: $4000, starting bid: $2,000.

Center: Ryan Whelan, A weed by any other name (diptych), 2020. Ink and pastel on paper. Approximately 15 x 22 inches each. Framed by Spot Design. Value: $5,000, starting bid: $2,500.

Right: Liz Hernández & Ryan Whelan, Petrified and preserved, 2023. Carved cantera stone. 6 x 6 x 0.75 inches. Value: $2000, starting bid: $1,000.

Courtesy the artists and Pt.2 Gallery, Oakland.

Each of these three works is an exquisite companion in varying media to Liz Hernández and Ryan Whelan’s inaugural exhibition here at ICA SF, A Weed by Any Other Name. These works are an extraordinary artistic homage to the resiliency required to be an artist living and working in the Bay Area, as well as to the artistic community in our region. The artists turned to the theme and imagery of the blackberry bush to create this narrative.

In the artists’ own words: “Weeds, generally described as ‘unwanted’ amongst the foliage, can be unusually persistent in the most neglected spaces. In this exhibition, we consider the humble blackberry, ubiquitous in the Bay Area, a symbol of resilience—a weed by any other name. You can cut down the blackberry bush, but with every fracture their intricate root system will generate more plants. This sums up the spirit of the Bay Area - a commitment to do, make, and be, regardless of such intense conditions.”
